GUIDE TO PERFECT COLD BREW

Cold brew coffee is a smooth, refreshing, and less acidic way to enjoy your coffee. It’s easy to make at home with a few simple steps. Here’s how to brew the perfect cold brew coffee.

Equipment Needed:

  • Large jar or pitcher
  • Burr grinder
  • Digital scale
  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
  • Coffee filter or nut milk bag (optional)

Ingredients:

  • Coffee beans: 100 grams (about 1 cup)
  • Water: 800 grams (about 4 cups), cold or room temperature

Step-by-Step Brewing Process:

  1. Choose Fresh, High-Quality Beans:

    • Select freshly roasted coffee beans. The quality of the beans significantly impacts the flavor of your cold brew.
  2. Measure and Grind Your Coffee:

    • Weigh 100 grams of coffee beans using a digital scale.
    • Grind the beans to a coarse consistency, similar to sea salt. A coarse grind prevents over-extraction and ensures a smoother flavor.
  3. Combine Coffee and Water:

    • Place the coarsely ground coffee into a large jar or pitcher.
    • Add 800 grams of cold or room temperature water. Ensure all the coffee grounds are fully saturated by stirring the mixture gently.
  4. Steep:

    • Cover the jar or pitcher and let it steep at room temperature for 12-24 hours. For a stronger concentrate, opt for a longer steeping time.
  5. Strain the Coffee:

    • After steeping, strain the coffee through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean jar or pitcher. For a clearer cold brew, you can strain it a second time through a coffee filter or a nut milk bag.
  6. Serve and Store:

    • Dilute the cold brew concentrate with water, milk, or a milk alternative to taste. A common ratio is 1:1, but you can adjust based on your preference.
    • Store the cold brew concentrate in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Tips for the Perfect Cold Brew Coffee:

  • Bean Freshness: Use freshly roasted beans and grind them just before brewing to maximize flavor.
  • Grind Consistency: Use a burr grinder for a consistent coarse grind.
  • Water Quality: Use filtered water to avoid any off-flavors.
  • Steeping Time: Experiment with the steeping time to find your preferred strength. Longer steeping times yield a stronger concentrate.
  • Serving Suggestions: Cold brew can be enjoyed over ice, with a splash of milk or cream, sweetened with syrups or sugar, or even mixed with flavored extracts for a unique twist.
